Accessible Seating and Facilities

​Most types of wheelchairs or mobility scooters can be accommodated aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway services; however, size restrictions do apply. In general, these dimension limits are 750mm wide by 1100mm long.

Storage options for mobility devices is limited to the carriage with accessible facilities only.

Heritage carriages

Kuranda Scenic Railway’s standard Heritage carriages have steep ladder style stairs with a grab rail at the top of the stairs. For customers who may have difficulty using the stairs or negotiating the gap between the train and the platform, we recommend booking into the carriage with accessible facilities where assistance with joining and leaving the train can be provided.

Gold Class carriages

Kuranda Scenic Railway’s standard Gold Class carriages have steep ladder style stairs with a grab rail at the top of the stairs. For customers who may have difficulty using the stairs or negotiating the gap between the train and the platform, we recommend booking into the carriage with accessible facilities where assistance with joining and leaving the train can be provided.

The accessible toilet facilities, accessible seating and spaces on Kuranda Scenic Railway are all located in this carriage. 

Accessible spaces and seats

The carriage with accessible facilities has four accessible spaces for customers to travel in or store a mobility device such as a wheelchair or mobility scooter. These accessible spaces are located nearby the accessible seats and are 755mm wide (W) by 1200mm long (L).

Accessible seats are available, including for people transferring into the seat from a mobility device. If you transfer to a seat, please be aware that the seating is club style lounge seating with arm rests which cannot be moved or adjusted. You may require assistance from a companion or carer to transfer. The seat height is 430mm with a length and width of 450mm.

When an accessible seat is booked, an accessible space nearby is provided along with the option of a seat for companions and carers.

Note: Depending on the carriage used, accessible seats are not able to be turned so some of these seats are facing backwards.

Transferring from a mobility device to a seat

Customers who wish to transfer from their mobility device to a seat may do so independently if they are able or have a carer to assist.

You may choose to either remain in your mobility device in an accessible space or transfer to a seat. Your carer or companion can travel with you.  If you transfer to a seat, please be aware that the seating is club style lounge seating with arm rests which cannot be moved or adjusted. You may require assistance from a companion or carer to transfer. The seat height is 430mm.

Your wheelchair or mobility scooter can be stored in a nearby accessible space and used throughout the journey as required.

Remaining in your mobility device

For customers remaining in their mobility device, accessible spaces are available aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway. For safety reasons, it is recommended that your mobility device is secured using the tie down straps because the incline can be steep during the journey. Customers can choose to have their mobility device secured into position by tie down straps or use their device's braking mechanism. You can inform us of your preference when booking or on the day of travel.

Tie Down Straps: If using tie down straps our Onboard team can only secure or release these when the train is stationary throughout the journey.

Accessible unisex toilet

The carriage with accessible facilities has an accessible unisex toilet (height: 460mm). 

The toilet has a large sliding door, with a button to open and close the door, grab rails, an emergency call button and a handle to lock the door for privacy.

Customers who are deaf or have hearing impairment

Please let our team know when booking if you require a carriage with accessible seating and facilities or assistance with boarding. Please note there are no hearing loops provided with the audio system on this train. Audio commentary can be provided in written format on request from our onboard team.

Please let our team know when booking if you require a carriage with accessible seating and facilities or assistance with boarding.
